turkey shoot - Key West style

Usually a turkey shoot is a contest where folks shoot at a target and the one closest to the bullseye wins a free turkey for Thanksgiving, or a coupon for a free turkey to pick up at the grocery store.

But as with most things, it is done a little differently here in Key West.

Our "Turkey Shoot" begins at 1 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day, where everyone gets to flip the bird by firing a turkey out of an air cannon, off the Sunset Pier and into the ocean.

Like angels from heaven, these birds will be flying on a wing and a prayer... to hit the target, that is.

Accuracy is the key, as the highest scores will win great prizes. There will be a men's, women's, and kids' division. This is a FREE event.

Live Turkeys???? Is that even humane??

All I can think is that old WKRP in Cincinnati episodes where the station manager wanted to drop turkeys out of an airplane in a station promotion. Their newscaster Les Nesman described it much like the Hindenburg disaster. "Oh the humanity.........." when the turkeys dropped like sacs of wet cement. This lead the boss to say "as God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly". It was a classic and there is probably video on You Tube if I go look.
