following the white blazes

Starting out on the Appalachian Trail, which way do you want to go? Just follow the white blazes on the trees, see the one in this picture? Those 2 x 6 inch white paint blazes will take you 2,174 miles. Don't forget to stop and enjoy the wildflowers along the way.

As you go tramping through the woods, are you supposed to sing, "Follow the yellow brick road," or maybe, "Lions and tigers and bears, oh my"? It would be terrible to get either of these songs stuck in your head for 2,174 miles.

I don't know if I would be up to walking the entire trail. I can barely walk across the yard these days.

That's alot of walking...and I'm afraid it would take me a year or two to walk that far...maybe longer. It would be great fun if my husband was willing to walk with me and camp along the way, but we sure couldn't carry enough food for the trip.
I wonder what hikers do?
