economic indicators

pucker up ~ Historically lipstick sales go up during hard times. Don't ask me why, but during the Great Depression, cosmetic sales increased 25% and after Sept. 11, lipstick sales doubled. more...

soup's on ~ During hard times folks eat soup (which makes much more sense than the lipstick). On September 29th the stock market fell 8.8% — its biggest percentage decline since the 1987 stock market crash. Only one stock in the index — Campbell Soup — finished higher. more...

bargains ~ No surprise here, hard times bring out the bargain shoppers in all of us, and where better to get lower prices on everything from medicine to food than Wal-Mart. Their new slogan, Save Money. Live Better is obviously working, as sales and stocks are up. more...

do it yourself ~ Stacks of firewood can be seen everywhere, on porches, in sheds, between trees. Why pay for high heating costs if you can cut your own firewood? It is good exercise, it gets you out of the house, it warms you twice, and it is pretty much free. more...

So call your broker, invest in lipstick and soup and Wal-Mart. Cut your own firewood. Hunker down for a long winter, hope your job holds out and your kids don't have to move back home. Oh, just kidding about the kids.

A story was passed along to me yesterday about this guy who walked into a brokerage office and plunked down $10M. Said now was the time to buy at bargain prices. Sounds like Mr. Potter in "It's A Wonderful Life," don'tcha think?

Wish I had that kind of money to throw around. Otherwise, I wouldn't be eating a lot of soup, shopping at Wally World, and cutting back on the thermometer in the house. Don't wear red lipstick but it's a thought. Maybe women buy a lot of lipstick in an economic downturn because they think it's going to attract some guy with a lot of moolah!

Nice post.

Right you are on these. I've heard skirt lengths get long too...a la the 1930s...but this seems counter-intuitive since it takes more material to make them! We'll see...

But homemade soup is even better and so easy to do! As for firewood, I'll support the local economy by buying some. Had to sell my chain saw as my hands are no longer strong enough to wield one. As for the lipstick, that I can do . . . even though no one will see me wear it to work.
