Yesterday - April 19th - was National Hanging Out Day - National Hanging Out Day was created to demonstrate how it is possible to save money and energy by using a clothesline.
Hanging clothes out to dry. I used to do it. Not because I had to, because I wanted to, I liked to do it. I liked the fresh scent that didn't come from a dryer sheet. I liked to see the cloth diapers all lined up blowing in the wind. Any kind of household chores that you can do outside is all right by me.
So why don't we do it anymore? Laziness? Too busy? It takes too long?

What a great site!!! The problem I have with hanging clothes out in my yard is two-fold. First, I have put out several bird feeders which attract a lot of birds. Do I really wish to contend with birdy poop on my clean clothes? Also, will my kitties think clothes flapping in the wind is something interesting to play with? Second, I'm an old person who shouldn't have to schlep baskets of wet clothes through the house and outside up and down the deck steps to hang clothes out.
I really don't have a good place for a clothes line in my yard. But, maybe I will look into one of those revolving set-ups with one pole and maybe I can get husband to put it up for me. And, maybe I can get husband to help me schlep the clothes in and out of the house.
I would be willing to do all this if we could convince a lot of people with really big houses (read energy inefficient houses) to forgo their A/C this summer and to also hang their clothes outside on the line. Think it will work?
I forgot to mention that my undies look like those from the 1900s. Comfortable but not too cute. (Just kidding.)
I still hang my clothes!! - I only use the dryer in bad weather.
I guess we have good hanging weather all year round here, so it gets us in the habit. I also hate the way dryers shrink things (like my T-shirts - drat it!)
I love that picture :)
P.S. my undies aren't up-to-date either .... more like 70's and 80's!
I don't know why folks don't do it. It takes less time.
I hung a load today, dry before I was done. and nicely winkle free with the wind.
Don't hang my granny panties out. lol
I put the clothes out on one of those umbrella dryers and they are dry in an hour. I love this Florida sun! Since we are all commenting about our undies - I love the "biggies" (1950's style)!
Used to hang my clothes out even after I got a dryer I would hang the sheets out but those days are gone where I live now there is no place to hang clothes and we live on a very dusty road. On my undies what they call ladies briefs - afraid no matter how warm it got a thong would be out of the picture for me.
The picture is a riot :) My undies aren't up to date either :) Does anyone really wear those uncomfortable things??
I hang my clothes out in the good weather, but of course, not in the winter. I love the smell of freshly air-dried clothes.
Just visiting from Colleen's link today...that is too funny.
Great site you have here.
After I finished laughing, I went to my environmental blog and posted the laundry line picture, giving you the credit. If you want to read my take on it, here's the URL (take out any spaces):

By the way, we are practically neighbors since I live in Chattanooga and you write about this area.
