the Lincoln connection

IMG_0152

What connection does Abraham Lincoln have to rural north Georgia?

The marble used in this beautiful statue was mined right here at the Georgia Marble Company in neighboring Pickens County.

Abraham Lincoln was born on this date, February 12, 1809, was the 16th POTUS, and is most famous for abolishing slavery by passing the 13th Amendment.

His assassination in 1865 was the first presidential assassination in U.S. history and made him a martyr for the ideal of national unity.

Most visitors when visiting the Lincoln Memorial remember his accomplishments and place in history, but we Georgians say, "Look, that's Georgia Marble!" Happy Birthday Mr. President.
