the Green River

It seems that whichever way you travel around here you will cross over the Green River at least once on your trip. On the way home from Owensboro, we came through Calhoun, Kentucky and crossed the Green River at the Green River Locks and Dam #2 (pictured), which was opened for barge traffic in 1840.

The Green River travels 384 miles through Western Kentucky. It flows through Mammoth Cave National Park. The river has been a major artery for the transportation of coal, especially in Muhlenberg County, once the largest coal producing county in the nation; also for the transportion of aluminum produced in the area. The Green River empties into the Ohio River at Evansville, IN.
