winter beach

Ocean City, Maryland is apparently a very popular summer tourist destination, 9 miles of beachfront hotels and restaurants and boardwalk. But this time of year it looks more like a ghost town. Which is good if you are here to work, the traffic is nonexistent, the lodging rates are supposedly off-season, but a lot of the restaurants are closed for the winter.

According to Wiki: The population was 7,102 at the 2010 census, although during summer weekends the city hosts between 320,000 and 345,000 vacationers.

The beach is wide and empty, the sand is smooth, the waves are crashing. But where are the seashells?

My blogger/quilter friend, Amy, lives here in Maryland and tells me: You guys chose the perfect time to be "Downy Ocean." (Spoken in pure Baltimore-ese.) Have some Boardwalk Fries - if you can.

She said "you guys" - love it!

And she offered an example of the local dialect:

Doen'cha knoe, hon, we wint downy oshun, but't took frevr t'git uvr dat dang Baybrij!

Translation: My friend of the opposite sex, we traveled to Ocean City, MD, but it took an exasperatingly inordinate amount of time to cross the Chesapeake Bay using the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

I figured out where all the people are - probably in Key West! So I am walking on the beach in my hiking boots, big coat, and gloves. Enjoying the sunshine and the waves and the miles of empty sand. Hey this weekend snow flurries are predicted!
