economic indicators

pucker up ~ Historically lipstick sales go up during hard times. Don't ask me why, but during the Great Depression, cosmetic sales increased 25% and after Sept. 11, lipstick sales doubled. more...



soup's on ~ During hard times folks eat soup (which makes much more sense than the lipstick). On September 29th the stock market fell 8.8% — its biggest percentage decline since the 1987 stock market crash. Only one stock in the index — Campbell Soup — finished higher. more...



bargains ~ No surprise here, hard times bring out the bargain shoppers in all of us, and where better to get lower prices on everything from medicine to food than Wal-Mart. Their new slogan, Save Money. Live Better is obviously working, as sales and stocks are up. more...

do it yourself ~ Stacks of firewood can be seen everywhere, on porches, in sheds, between trees. Why pay for high heating costs if you can cut your own firewood? It is good exercise, it gets you out of the house, it warms you twice, and it is pretty much free. more...

So call your broker, invest in lipstick and soup and Wal-Mart. Cut your own firewood. Hunker down for a long winter, hope your job holds out and your kids don't have to move back home. Oh, just kidding about the kids.
