small town progress

"The last wall of the old Gilmer County Courthouse crashes to the ground around 5 p.m. Monday afternoon, Jan. 7. The building, constructed as a hotel in 1898 and converted to a courthouse in 1934, will be replaced with a building similar in appearance to the historic structure." ~story on the front page of this week's local newspaper.

The people have spoken, and the old crumbling building was finally laid to rest. The new courthouse (phase I) can be seen in the above picture, on the left. Phase II of the new courthouse will begin soon to replace the old building, shown in this artist rendering:

Also in the paper: "The date of the new library’s grand opening celebration and open house has been set for Sunday, Jan. 27, 2-4 p.m. The public is invited to attend."

New library, new courthouse, progress is alive and well in our home town!
