a different world

Kiss The Cook

We were born to mothers who smoked and drank
Our cribs were covered in lead based paint

Heard this on the radio yesterday - gotta love that country music - but it really did ring true, a song about my childhood, well a whole generation... and I didn't realize how much Maxine reminds me of my mother!

No child proof lids no seat belts in cars
Rode bikes with no helmets and still here we are
still here we are

We got daddy’s belt when we misbehaved
Had three TV channels you got up to change
No video games and no satellite
All we had were friends and they were outside
playin' outside

It was a different life
When we were boys and girls
Not just a different time
It was a different world

School always started the same every day
The pledge of allegiance then someone would pray
Not every kid made the team when they tried
We got disappointed and that was all right
we turned out all right

It was a different life
When we were boys and girls
Not just a different time
It was a different world

No bottled water, we drank from a garden hose
And every Sunday, all the stores were closed

It was a different life
When we were boys and girls
Not just a different time
It was a different world

I enjoyed reading these lyrics. It made me realise just HOW much times have changed. Some I believe are for the better (child-proof lids, helmets & seatbelts, for example!) but others are not.....I think kids still need to learn to make their own games, play outside, face disappointments and deal with them.

As`always, you stimulate thought with your posts Susan.

Have a wonderful weekend!

I've heard those lines before, but not in a song.
So true!!
Kids definitely need to play outside more.
I remember my brother and I used to go off by ourselves (and with other neighborhood kids) all over the place...ride bikes without helmets, and didn't even have a TV until we were almost teens!
Jelly put it well. You do stimulate thoughts Susan.
Your mother must've been a hoot :)

Have to agree with Jelly that some things are for the better, but so many things have changed in our world. I think one of the saddest things is that many children seem to have never known the pleasure of entertaining themselves and being creative and using their imagination.

Also I firmly believe that we are trying to make children grow up too quickly and forcing them to confront issues that they are too young to deal with. Let them be kids whilst they are kids, for goodness sake!

That just gave me goosebumps! Although I still only have 3 channels and drink from my garden hose.

What a different world it was back then. For the better in most ways.

Boy, this hits home with us old folks! Yeah, it seems like the world is kind of "wimpy" now!
