leave no stone unturned

Tennessee field stone

We have it on our house.

Our chimney is made of it.

The name implies it is just lying around in fields waiting to be picked up and used for construction. That was in fact the case back in the 70s when we built our house, as much of the stone we received still had moss growing on it.

But now the land is being strip mined to get to the popular stone.

Rock mining is becoming a big concern along the Cumberland Plateau region of Tennessee according to this article in the Chattanooga Times Free Press.

The giant earthmovers are leaving no stone unturned in the effort to get to the beautiful Tennessee field stone. But it is no longer field stone, is it?
