counting sheep

Do you have trouble sleeping?

Sleep is one of my favorite things to do, I can sleep anywhere, anytime. On the couch, in the car, in the doctor's waiting room, at the movies. My better half cannot say the same. He wakes up in the night worrying about the job, he calls it Superintendent's disease, thinking about schedules, subcontractors, weather, etc. If it's not the job, then there are always other things he can worry about (and he does) like kids, money, home upkeep… the list goes on and on. My philosophy is - what good does it do to worry about it - does it change anything? - it is just a waste of time.

How to sleep? I remember Colonel Potter on MASH talking about he and his wife sleeping "like two spoons in a drawer". We sometimes do this, or sometimes we sleep back to back like empty bookends, or to our respective corners like boxers at the sound of the bell, it depends on how cold it is!

I remember the classic movie "White Christmas" with Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney (she used to be a big star in her day - but in her later years she was known as George's aunt). There is a scene when neither of them can sleep, and of course they break into song about it:

If you're worried and you can't sleep
Just count your blessings instead of sheep
And you'll fall asleep…
… counting your blessings

Try not to worry too much, don't let the stress of the holidays wear you down, just relax and enjoy this time of year… yawn… is it nap time yet?

The bed is a bundle of paradoxes: we go to it with reluctance, yet we quit it with regret; we make up our minds every night to leave it early, but we make up our bodies every morning to keep it late.
