play on words

Whenever the grandkids come up, they love to pull out the Scrabble game. It is fun to watch the different strategies. Kyle will take a long time with each of his turns, scouting out every possible option for the most points. Sarah is impatient, telling everyone to hurry up. Madison likes to make words on her tile rack and wishes she could use them on the board. Why do they love it so, don't they know it is educational?

I told the kids that just last month someone scored 830 points in a Scrabble game, a record for the highest score ever. See story here.

Scrabble was invented by an architect, Alfred Butts. He designed the boards using his drafting equipment. After being named Lexico, Criss-Cross Words, and finally Scrabble (meaning - to grope frantically), the game took off in 1948 and is now in 1 of every 3 households. History of scrabble here.
